Marine Certification 5052 Flat Aluminium Sheet

Aluminum alloys have been used in the shipbuilding industry since the late nineteenth century. However, the strength and corrosion resistance of the few aluminum alloys available at the time were insufficient, thus they were not widely employed. Aluminum alloys got significant attention in the shipbuilding industry only with the rapid development of the metallurgical industry and the creation of aluminum-magnesium alloys with high corrosion resistance. By the mid-twentieth century, the use of aluminium alloys in civilian ships had peaked.

The 5xxx series aluminum alloy, often known as rust-proof aluminum, is an aluminum alloy with magnesium concentration ranging from 3% to 5%. The 5xxx series aluminum alloy offers low density, high strength, corrosion resistance, excellent welding and surface treatment properties. It has a wide range of applications, including packaging materials, marine engineering, building, and transportation.

The aluminum alloys of the 5xxx series include 5005, 5052, 5083, 5a05, and 5059, among others. 5052 aluminum sheet for sale is a standard 5xxx marine grade aluminum alloy. It outperforms other aluminum alloys in terms of mechanical processing, forming, and welding capabilities.

1. Forming properties

5052 marine grade aluminum has good ductility after hot processing. Forging and die forging temperatures range between 420℃ and 475℃. Hot deformation occurs within this temperature range, with a deformation amount of more than 80%. The cold stamping performance is related to the alloy state. The cold stamping performance of the annealed (O) state is good, followed by the H32 and H34 states, whereas the H36/H38 state is poor.

2. Welding performance

The alloy performs well in gas welding, arc welding, resistance welding, spot welding, and seam welding, but it is prone to crystal cracking during two-argon arc welding. The brazing performance is satisfactory, however the soft soldering performance is inadequate. The welding strength and plasticity are strong, reaching 90% to 95% of the base metal strength. However, the weld air tightness is not very great.

3.Machinability

The alloy has poor cutting performance when annealed, but it improves after cold hardening. It offers great weldability, decent cold workability, and medium strength.
